You suspect someone is stalking you or a loved one. Perhaps you’ve noticed someone suspicious around your area. You might be a businessman who’s had enough of employee theft. It doesn’t matter. The minute you start looking into a security cameras system, you are brought to your knees with the first volley of new jargon, a seemingly endless list of options and a business niche that seems to have more conpersons than the used car trade.

What to do?

The first thing is to remember that there are basically just two types of security systems. The first one is the one that uses hidden video cameras. Bear in mind that although this system excels at what it was designed for (to video a crime in progress), it has never stopped a crime from happening. It just watches and the criminals don’t know they are being watched. Therefor, there is no deterrent.

The other system uses basically the same surveillance cameras equipment, but the cameras are easily visible. As a matter of fact, you want these as visible as you can make them. Whoever you are trying to scare away, you want to let them know that anything they do will be recorded and that throws the most feared thing into the heart of any criminal. Getting caught. Even worse is getting caught with a video to show in court. There is no denying, no alibis for a video recording.

This type of system comes in two formats. One is hard wired where wires are run from each camera to a central recording unit, usually a digital video recorder. Another type is wireless which means no wires. It transmits a radio type signal from the camera to the central processing unit.

The downside of this one is that radio signals do not go through concrete or metal very well. These devices come in three frequencies; 900 megahertz, 2.4 gigahertz and 5.8 gigahertz. A good rule of thumb for this decision is that the lower the frequency, the more clearly a signal will go through metal or a concrete.

As I have stated in previous articles, the absolute best advice I can give you is to find someone you trust who has used a particular security company and would highly recommend it. A facility like that will give you proper and professional advice. In the meantime, please use this article as a starting point on your quest.

Be safe.
